Honda ramps up vehicle lines for higher volumes of sales in North America

The Fit may be Honda’s smallest (and, starting at under $15k, most cost-effective) model, but it has never sold in quantities that even approach those of the brand’s larger offerings – at least not in the Canada or the United States. Where Honda typically sells hundreds of thousands of Civic and Accord models in North America – even CR-V crossovers and Odyssey minivans – annual sales for the Fit typically amount to tens of thousands. But the Japanese automaker hopes to expand its sales in the segment with the introduction of the new 2015 Honda Fit.

Having launched the all-new model several months ago in the Japanese Domestic Market, Honda is presenting the new Fit to the North American market here at the Detroit Auto Show. By and large, it’s the same model that will be sold around the world, having been redesigned with more aggressive styling, a larger footprint on the road and more interior space.

New, luxurious, and secure: Audi introduces new safety features

If there were ever a sedan that deserved the descriptor of “luxury,” surely it’s the Audi A8. Particularly in long-wheelbase form. But for many of Audi’s wealthy customers around the world – namely those in developing markets – there can be no greater luxury than security. And for just those customers, Audi has announced the new A8 L Security.

These new safety features include active lane assist, which tugs the steering to bring the car back into its lane if it drifts unintentionally across the lane markings. Also there are night-vision pedestrian detection and a fully featured head-up display. Blind-spot warning also continues as part of the A8 package.

In addition, you’ll also be able to ensure the safety of parked cars, since optional park assist will be available to steer the A8 into a parking slot.

Chrysler 200 Back On Track for 2015

Great little car, hope it makes the comeback they expect! It’s fair to say that Chrysler Corporation has been on a major perception upswing with its new products, but that rise has largely been centered around its trucks and utility vehicles – the car side has been somewhat left out. The outgoing 200 (previously skinned as the Sebring) never garnered any laurels, the Dart has suffered a rather cool reception both critically and in terms of sales, the second-gen 300 is a nice car yet it hasn’t sold as well as its predecessor, and even the mighty SRT Viper has had its V10 bark muted by the less costly and multi-talented Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Resurgent Chrysler could use a hit car, and the 2015 Chrysler 200 may just be it.

Honda Hold Down the Price on the 2014 Insight

Great to see this hybrid keep a competitive price level! The 2014 Honda Insight is a maligned, dreary little hatchback (yes, we speak from experience). But it does have three saving graces: It’s Honda-reliable, it gets great fuel economy, and it has a new-car warranty. If you really feel the need to count a fourth virtue, it’s the cheapest hybrid on sale today. That’s the equivalent of saying you got you prom tux at Wal-Mart.

Starting at a healthy $18,725, not including $790 for destination and handling, the Honda Insight putters along with automatic climate control, a 160-watt stereo, and power windows as standard equipment. The next-up Honda Insight LX carries those features, but adds steering wheel-mounted audio controls, a USB port, floor mats, an armrest console (yes, seriously, this is still an option in some cars in 2013), and floor mats.

Next up the food chain is the Honda Insight EX, which adds automatic headlights, alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, Bluetooth, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a six-speaker audio system. From there, a navigation system is still yet available, and it also comes with a backup camera and FM traffic monitor.

All 2014 Honda Insights wheeze along with a 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine and Integrated Motor Assist hybrid powertrain that’s good for some 98 horsepower. The car is rated at 41 mpg city/44 mpg highway, which almost makes suffering through the ownership of a Honda Insight seem worth it. Almost.

Hyundai Accent 2014 Gets More Bang for the Buck

This nice little car has carved out quite a nice niche! The 2014 Hyundai Accent is the Korean automaker’s entry-level model, but now more than ever, it comes loaded with a high level of standard and available content. The new model receives a one-touch triple turn signal, sliding sun visors—really every car should have these—and a blind spot monitor on the driver’s side. The entry-level audio system has also been improved with better voice recognition and a new button layout.

Five-door 2014 Hyundai Accent SE models, and four-door models equipped with the Premium Package will also get new projector headlights with LED accents, one touch auto-up windows on the driver’s side, and a tilt and telescopic steering wheel. A fun, added piece of available equipment on the five-door Accent, is the B&M Racing Sport Shifter.

The 2014 Hyundai Accent will retain the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine capable of 138 hp, which is more than any other subcompact car, save for the Chevrolet Sonic, which boasts the same 138 horses. We liked the Accent when we drove it, though it competes in a very tough segment with the likes of the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, the aforementioned Chevy Sonic, the Nissan Versa, and the charming but underpowered Mazda2. The 2014 Hyundai Accent gets an EPA estimated 27 mpg city, and up to 38 mpg on the highway.

2015 Nissan GT-R Nismo Leaked Pics

An amazing looking car!  Embargoes break all the time, so we have to be on our feet all the time, especially during auto show season when everything’s flying around at supersonic speeds. The latest car in question is the 2015 Nissan GT-R Nismo, a car that will reportedly come packing just under 600 horsepower and have a Nurburgring Nordschleife track time of just seven minutes and eight seconds. That puts it into some seriously fast company, like million-dollar car territory, if it is to be believed. None of that has yet to be confirmed by Nissan.

Much of that alleged time will be attributable to Dunlop Sport Maxx GT tires, which are bubble-gum sticky. The car will allegedly also have a sports package aimed at lowering its weight by 143 pounds via a higher use of carbon fiber composites. No other numbers have been released, but we’ll provide you with official stats as soon as we get them.

Car Legend Carrol Shelby Dies

This guy was such an inspiration! The legendary Carroll Shelby has left us at the age of 89, passing away yesterday at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. The cause of death was not disclosed. Shelby’s story was quintessentially American. He was a rural Texan, a World War II pilot and flight instructor, an oil-field laborer, and a chicken farmer in bib overalls whom some say turned to racing when all his chickens died. Whatever the catalyst, Shelby demonstrated a natural knack for road racing from the moment he took the wheel of a wheezy MG TC in 1952, seeking the adrenaline rush of speed he’d become addicted to while flying in the war. He managed to outperform many more powerful cars in that teetering MG, and soon matriculated to a “real” race car — a Cadillac-powered Allard J2 — and won an SCCA event in Caddo Mills, Texas. From that moment on, he was hooked on the big Yankee V-8/lithe British chassis formula.

Automotive Hall of Fame Chooses Four More

Great inductees this year! Tom Gale, Chuck Jordan, James Couzens, and Albert Kahn are this year’s inductees to the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Michigan.

Gale is a friend of Motor Trend, as a regular judge on our Car of the Year awards. He joined Chrysler’s design staff in 1967 and worked there until his retirement in 2000. The radically redesigned 1971 Plymouth B-body midsize cars marked his first major design. Gale also is credited for the original Dodge Viper concept, the cab-forward 1998 LH sedans, and the 2005 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Magnum/Charger RWD sedans released after his retirement. Concept cars include the Chrysler Atlantic, Chronos, and Portofino, and Plymouth Prowler.

Audi’s New Hybrid Sport Quattro Concept Car

This car looks amazing! Audi’s Sport Quattro plug-in hybrid concept to be shown this week at the Frankfurt auto show generates 700 hp, yet has a fuel economy equivalent of 95 mpg, Audi says.

The company last week released pictures and details of the two-door concept, which is powered by a 4.0-liter V-8 gasoline engine and an electric motor and previews a possible technological flagship.

The concept has permanent four-wheel drive and is expected to go into limited production to form the centerpiece of Audi’s renewed 4wd focus after moves by Jaguar, BMW and Mercedes-Benz to increase the number of 4wd models in their lineups.

Audi says the concept can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds. It can travel 32 miles on electric power alone.

If Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler gives the go ahead, the Sport Quattro will go into limited production in late 2015 priced at about $150,000. The production version is expected to use a modified version of Audi’s modular longitudinal architecture.

Audi said the concept is unusually low-slung, with a height of 55 inches. Its wheelbase, at 110 inches, is similar to that of the A5. The car is a hatchback with a rear tailgate opening.

The concept was created to mark the 30th anniversary of the classic Sport Quattro that made its debut at the 1983 Frankfurt auto show as a homologation model for the World Rally Championship.

The Sport Quattro concept is Audi’s second attempt to resurrect the revered model after the smaller but similarly styled Quattro concept unveiled at the 2010 Paris auto show.

Audi says the Frankfurt concept’s top speed is 190 mph.

Cool New Aluminum Jaguar Soon to Launch

If you are a Jag fan like I am then this is good news! Jaguar will launch a mid-sized sedan based on a new aluminum architecture in the United States in 2016, giving the company what it hopes will be a much-needed volume model to compete with German rivals.

The company unveiled plans for the unibody architecture and sedan — which launches first in Europe in 2015 — with the introduction today of a crossover concept for the Frankfurt auto show.

The platform is designed to support “a range of future Jaguars,” the company said, including a crossover, a booming segment the brand would be entering.

The mid-sized sedan is expected to compete with premium German models such as the BMW 3 series and 5 series, and the Mercedes-Benz E class and new-generation C class.

It would give Jaguar a volume product that would help Jaguar Land Rover achieve its long-term global sales targets of 750,000 units by the end of the decade and 1 million units eventually.

Jaguar hasn’t confirmed plans for the crossover but the C-X17 concept unveiled ahead of the Frankfurt auto show is the strongest signal yet that the brand plans to enter the segment.

Land Rover markets the Evoque compact crossover but the lack of an all-wheel-drive crossover has slowed Jaguar Land Rover’s growth and competitiveness in markets such as the United States.

Larger rivals BMW, Mercedes and Audi — and even Porsche — have been marketing crossovers for years, drawing new buyers and adding incremental sales volume.

“The C-X17 sports crossover represents an exciting new direction for Jaguar. Its purpose is to highlight our all-new aluminum architecture. With this technical foundation, we will dramatically expand Jaguar’s product offering, market potential and customer appeal,” said Adrian Hallmark, global brand director for Jaguar.

“This new philosophy will bring technology from our top-of-the-range products into new growing premium segments, and when combined with our new ultraefficient engines, we will set a global standard.”

The crossover will be named the XQ or Q-Type while the sedan will be called the XS, according to media reports.

First aluminum unibody in segment

Jaguar claims the sedan will be the first aluminum unibody vehicle in the C and D segments.

The sedan and other variants off the platform will use a new-generation Jaguar Land Rover-developed four-cylinder engine. Jaguar plans gasoline and diesel versions of the high-output, fuel-efficient engines.

The small-displacement engines will be made in a new $776 million factory in Wolverhampton, England.
